Suburbia Meets Rural Living

About North Richmond

Although located west of Richmond, was thought to have been named ‘North’ Richmond because it was north of Richmond Hill by Governor Phillip when traveling up the Hawkesbury River in 1789. A local landowner John Town established the “woolpack Inn” in 1833, on the higher ground of the river crossing. Later in 1874, the name was changed to “Travelers’ Rest”, which later inspired  the North Richmond Hotel to be built next door in the 1940’s. The first wooden bridge was built across the Hawkesbury River to provide easier access in 1860, which was later redesigned in 1905 to concrete.
